Can't Catch a Break
Out of the blue, he asked me "Mama, who's your boyfriend?"
My thoughts instantly divided between "Huh, did he just ask me that?" and "Oh no, not him, too!"
"I don't have a boyfriend, sweetheart."
"Yes you do."
"I'm your boyfriend, Mama, but who's your other boyfriend?"
"Baby, Mama doesn't have a boyfriend."
"Why don't you have a boyfriend?"
Here's where telling the truth isn't always the right thing to do.
Instead of saying "because the 'men' around here are losers who only want in a girl's pants instead of her heart" or "because I'm already raising one child, I don't need to raise another" or even "because Mama doesn't like being lied to and cheated on" I just simply went with a half-truth.
"Because Mama doesn't need a boyfriend."
If only my brain could convince that big empty hole inside of me that I was telling the truth.
